Pen Names & Prejudice: The Marginalization of Female Authors in Literature

The Marginalization of Female Authors in Literature
Many prolific female authors have, at points in their careers, used pseudonyms to mask their identities as women due to prejudice from publishers and audiences. This site explores many such authors and the reasoning behind their (or their publisher's) choice to use masculine or gender-neutral pen names rather than their own. The site offers first-hand accounts from these authors as well as second-hand accounts, charts, videos, and cartoons that address this ongoing issue of marginalization. The right-hand sidebar contains links to these accounts as well as some data-based questions to aid in the discussion and internalization of each topic.
My Masters program concentration is in both Social Studies and Language Arts, so I created this site as a way to simultaneously promote Social Justice Education and fuse the two content areas. Additionally, the authors included in this study just so happen to include some of my favorites: Charlotte Bronte, S.E. Hinton, and J.K. Rowling.
